Each year, the Stone Centre welcomes incoming Master of Arts in Economics students to apply for the Stone Masters Fellowship. This fellowship is intended to support first year MA students whose research aims to deepen and broaden the collective understanding of wealth and income inequality in Canada and beyond.
Eligibility
Applicants must be candidates for UBC’s Master of Arts in Economics program going into their first year of study. Enrollment confirmation in the MA program is not required when applying for the fellowship.
Funding
Each Masters Fellow will receive $15,000 in fellowship funding for up to one year. Masters Fellows will also receive an additional $2,000 research stipend which can be used to cover costs related to data collection and analysis and travel to conferences.
Additional Benefits
Fellows will have access to technical support and help in accessing Statistics Canada data.
Fellows will have access to the Stone Centre common room for additional workspace, and opportunities to interact with other Stone Centre scholars.
Fellowship Outline
This fellowship is a 12-month program:
Semester 1: Fellows take foundational classes taken by all students in the MA program
Semester 2: Fellows are required to take the graduate course ECON 553, and may enrol in other courses with an inequality component such as labor economics, public economics, development, and empirical research methods.
Summer: Fellows complete their major research paper on topics related to wealth and income inequality.
How to Apply
Applicants should indicate their interest in being considered for Stone Masters Fellowship funding within their application for UBC’s Master of Arts in Economics program. In the statement of interest, applicants should clearly demonstrate how their research interests or intended research align with the Stone Centre’s focus on wealth and income inequality.
Evaluation
Stone Research Masters Fellowships are competitive in nature. A committee of Stone Centre faculty will select candidates whose research and academic goals best align with the Centre’s mission to better understand the causes and consequences of wealth and income inequality, and possible remedies.
Terms and Conditions
In the event that a successful applicant is awarded multiple major fellowships or scholarships, their total funding package may be subject to adjustment in accordance with the policies and guidelines of the University. The specific terms of any adjustments will be communicated to the recipient upon notification of the fellowship.
The fellowship funding will be dispersed in three equal installments throughout the year, with the first installment arriving in early September.
Fellows must enroll in the required courses in order to remain eligible for future payment installments.
