The Stone Centre’s research projects collectively examine the causes and consequences of wealth and income inequality through diverse lenses, spanning social structures, labour markets, policy, and history. Overall, this body of work provides a comprehensive, multidisciplinary understanding of inequality as a product of interacting social, economic, and historical forces, while informing potential policy responses.
Some projects explore how inequality is embedded in institutions such as families, racial hierarchies, and discriminatory norms, while also analyzing labour market dynamics like outsourcing, unionization, occupational change, and job transitions. Other work evaluates policy tools—including taxation, redistribution, and cash transfers—and how public attitudes toward inequality are formed. The portfolio also addresses broader economic forces such as globalization, technological change, and sectoral shifts, alongside long-term and historical analyses of inequality persistence.
